Lubricants 101 – The Novice Guide

Ladies, we all go through a dry spell every now and then and proper lubrication is mandatory during anal sex, so it is a necessity to know which lubricant best serves your needs. When buying a lubricant always keep in mind how it will be used and whether it will be used with your favorite toys, because the wrong lube can lead to toy erosion, stains or even vaginal irritation. Label reading—it’ll save you problems later!

Water based – This is the best type of lubricant by far because it cleans up easy and won’t stain your sheets or underwear. The downside is that they tend to dry quicker than other lubricants, so you might have to reapply more often during sex. Water based lubricants also come in an assortment of flavors, making them the top choice for oral sex play.  This type of lube can be safely used with CyberSkin, silicone, jelly and rubber toys. It is also safe to use with condoms. Popular brands include KY Jelly, Astroglide and Climax Lube.

Silicone based – This lubricant is best known for being waterproof, which makes it number one for play in water. A little goes a long way when it comes to silicone based lubes so these work great for those all night play sessions. Soap and water make clean up easy. Silicone lubrication is strictly forbidden to be used on CyberSkin or silicone toys because it will destroy the material. Popular brands include WET-Platinum and Eros Bodyglide.

Petroleum basedI do not recommend the use of petroleum based lubricants!! This is the least popular lubricant for a few reasons: it can not be used on rubber or CyberSkin toys, it can be irritating to the vagina, it stains, and it will render condoms, diaphragms and cervical caps useless. Safe sex practices do not allow for petroleum based lubes because they will break down and destroy a condom or dam’s material. Popular brands include Baby Oil and Vaseline.
